WB Gift Basket Giveaway

Getting my kids to eat right has been a real challenge the last couple of days. They are always wanting snacks and always candy! To be honest the keep finding my secret candy stash. So we just went grocery shopping yesterday and stocked up on the fruit. Sometimes it can be hard to buy healthy items because they are always so much more expensive than the cheap processed food in boxes with the fun pictures. So when the kids ask for something sugary and I am tired of constantly saying no I have been telling them they have to eat a healthy snack first. That way they can fill up on the good stuff leaving less room for the bad.

I also have been making all fruit smoothies and letting my boys help. They love having the choice of what fruit they want in it as well as taking turns pushing the button on the blender.

Don't forget to head over to Momlogic.com where you can chat with nutritionist Haylie Pomroy

  1. We rarely go to fast food places, but if we have to, apple slices and other healthy alternatives replace french fries. You don't want to shelter your kids but at the same time, you do want to teach them that all this junky soda and whatnot are not good choices.

  2. We started a try a new food night with the grandkids. I find healthy foods usually a fruit or vegetable that no one has tried before and we all have to at least try it. Believe it or not we are finding a lot of new foods that we really like and that can be added to their diet. It is a lot of fun for all of us too. Thank you so much!

  5. Great question! I'm a Grandma now and recently my daughter-in-law and I were talking about getting her kids to eat soups. They just refuse to eat them and of course with kids soup is a healthy and easy meal-- if they eat it! So I shared some tricks I've used over the years:
I think half the battle is making it fun and getting them involved. They almost always will eat something they "cooked".
I dice up small pieces of cheddar cheese which they get to add to their soup.
I put 4-5 saltine crackers in a ziplock bag and they get to smash their own and add them.
Noodle soups I let them add a few goldfish crackers.
If all else fails they can't resist tomato soup if they get to eat it with a straw!
This is one Grammy who never says "don't play with your food"! Thanks for asking!

  8. When we eat things, we have been discussing what is nutritious and makes us grow and what is a treat. My daughter is picking up on it and understands that some things we eat because they are good for us and others we eat bc they just taste good! This seems to be working for us.

  17. My daughter is encouraged to try all kinds of healthy foods at our house (she's only 2 though, so she tries some and not others) and we limit the temptation of eating junk by not having it around. She is learning to eat healthy by following our example!

  21. We talk about what is healthy, but also they help me make the menus and make sure they are good for us. We play a game, especially while eating breakfast, where one person chooses a food package and the others have to guess how much fat, sugar, etc. is in it. It makes them (and me) more aware of what is in packaged food.

  85. My daughter is almost 2, so I mostly teach her about healthy eating by setting a good example. We eat a lot of fruits and veggies, and she loves them all! We very rarely eat fast food, and if we do, she gets apples instead of french fries and milk instead of soda, etc. Also, we only buy wheat flour, pasta, etc. So, she has never even had white bread before. Sweets and treats are very limited too...So that's how we try to teach her about healthy eating.

  86. I always looking for new recipes using healthy veggies and fruits. That way, it can be something new for the whole family and we all try it at the same time. I also try to have 4 different items on the dinner plate. Our rule is, you can leave one of them. Everything else has to be eaten gone. That way, they can choose not to eat the broccoli, but they have to eat the salad instead. It works great for us!
